Origin of Snooker in Nerbudda Club Jabalpur
During British Rule in India, river Narmada was pronounced as Nerbudda. Inspired from Narmada river, Nerbudda Club was founded in 1889. It was land of 14.63 Acres, leased by the Cantonment in perpetuity to Nerbudda Club on annual rent of Rs. 3.
Main building of Nerbudda club was erected in before year 1905 in which lease was formally granted. In year 1940, due to War emergency, military authorities built 26 quarters ont he premises with the pervious consent of the club. Club was formally registered in 1904. Club was created mainly to offer entertainment facilities to British officers stationed in Central India. Famous Army officers and civilians who have been in Jabalpur and had membership of club are: Sir Neville Chamberlain, General Cariappa, General Ayub Khan (of Pakistan), Mr. Fox Strangeways etc. |

Jabalpur is be birth place of Snooker game, when Neville Francis Fitzgerald Chamberlain suggested to add other coloured balls to the game. The name of the game came after Chamberlain, called one of the player "a real snooker". Word "Snooker" was a slang term used for first year cadet. During those days, this game was very popular and was mostly played during monsoon season as it was a indoor game. |
