Jabalpur is one the biggest city of Madhya Pradesh State in Central India. It lies in Mahakoshal region of Madhya Pradesh, Central India. It is a district of Madhya Pradesh State. District Head quarter of Jabalpur is in Jabalpur city. It is considered one of the fastest growing cities of Central India. Despite of the pace of growth, it is believed to have maintained its natural beauty and resources. It is on the bank of holy Narmada River. Jabalpur is also known for famous National Parks (Tiger reserves) around it and marble rocks on Narmada River. From Wildlife Tourism point of view also Jabalpur has its unique presence in Tourist Map of Madhya Pradesh. Important government offices like head quarters of West Central Zone, Madhya Pradesh High court, Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board etc are in Jabalpur city.

History of Jabalpur City : It is a historical city and has description in ancient Hindu’s religious books & Veda’s. The name of the Jabalpur City is derived from holy Hindu saint “Jabaali” who had his aashram in this area. Jabalpur is also known as “Gondwana Land”. Jabalpur was the capital of Gond kings during the 12th century. During the 16th century it became the powerful states of Gondwana. After 16th century, i.e. after defeat of Rani Durgawati, area lost its enamor and flourish-ness. Although it was ruled by Gonds but with limited rights & power under supremacy of Mughals, It was also beleaguered by the Mughals and later it was conquered by the Marathas in the end of 17th century.

Finally in 19th century, it came under British rule. Jabalpur became major army center under British Rule and was head quarter of anti-thuggee cult department under the leadership of Col. W. H. Sleeman. Since then Jabalpur remains an important administration head quarter for Central India. It has Head Offices of major government offices like West Central Railway, Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board etc.

Demographics Details of Jabalpur City

Jabalpur city population is evenly distributed. Still due to narrow roads, slow traffic movements and establishments, it seems congested. Religious Population Composition of Jabalpur includes Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christians, Jain and Parsi community also. City has majority of Hindu population followed by Muslim community. About 70 percent of city population is literate and is still increasing. Most of the schools of Jabalpur are in Hindi medium due to which population of English literate youth in Jabalpur city is low. Youth population of Jabalpur is more than aged population. Here sex ratio in Jabalpur is also not balanced. About 54% of total Jabalpur city Population constitutes Male and 46% females.

Jabalpur Cantonment

In the year of 1904, formally cantonment has been translocated from Katni to Jabalpur city. Since then Jabalpur Cantonment remain important army center with vital army installations in the region like Training Center from Signals, Vehicle Factory, Gun Carriage Factor etc. Jabalpur Cantonment area is spread over green belt of 7040 acres of land. It comprises Civil areas, Army formations and establishments like Head Quarter Madhya Bharat Area, JAK Rifles Regimental Centre, Grenadiers Regimental Centre, 1 Signal Training Centre, College of Material Management, Central Ordnance Depot, 506 Army Base Workshop, Military Hospital, HQ Chief Engineer Jabalpur Zone , Military Dairy Farm and HQ Recruiting Zone. Jabalpur Airport was earlier developed for army in Jabalpur and later use for commercial flights also.

One can find many British era buildings and religious places (Churches) in Jabalpur Cantonment area. Jabalpur cantonment have headquarter of MBPO. Vehicles manufactures in Jabalpur Vehicle Factory are sent to military establishments spread all over the India.
